We made a pilgrimage to Canterbury to see the cathedral today. Wonderful medieval architecture, with some stunning stained glass, both ancient and modern, and a lovely undercroft. Like many cathedrals, it has been altered and added to over the centuries (it took about a 1,000 years to reach the form we see today, there since the late 15th century) and there are numerous suprise corners hidden away up and down steps and behind arches.

We looked in at the Beaney Institute, now the Royal Museum and Art Gallery, where they had an interesting permanent collection of the works of Thomas Sidney Cooper(1803 - 1902) Victorian painter of livestock, especially renowned for his cattle. They were rather nice.
They also had an exhibition "From Representation to Abstract", featuring modern artists available in local commercial galleries. Again, some interesting pictures, and one or two we would have gladly brought home to hang on our own walls.
We weren't overly impressed by the Museum of Cambridge - lovely medieval wood framed building, but too much book-on-the-wall with too few artefacts or reproductions. The best bits were the artists' impressions of Canterbury as it changed through the centuries.
We finished up with the "Canterbury Tales Experience" - great fun and very well done, if a tad over-priced.
All in all another very good day.

Briefly found Fulstow, but didn't have time to do much with it.
I got one of those "Website is experiencing difficulties" notifications. I'll try again.

I love it there, I often go to Canterbury cathedral to light a candle for somebody , I'm not particularly religious but it's got a very spiritual feeling in there whatever the reason for it.
The wife of bath's tale is the one that sticks in my mind from the canterbury tales, it always makes me smile to see some parents whip the earphones off their kids heads when that story comes on!

Having been brought up in Lincolnshire, Lincoln cathedral is probably my favourite, but I loved Canterbury too and will certainly be going again.

I haven't been to Lincoln cathedral, I live near Canterbury which is the main reason I have been there, I have only been to two, the other was Rochester, again because it is in the area.
I will definately visit the Cathedral in Lincoln next time I am near there.

We liked Rochester too. Very different from Canterbury, but I remember it as very bright and cheerful in character.
You will notice from my blogs that we are great tourists, and we always visit a new cathedral if we're in the vicinity!
