Canterbury
We made a pilgrimage to Canterbury to see the cathedral today. Wonderful medieval architecture, with some stunning stained glass, both ancient and modern, and a lovely undercroft. Like many cathedrals, it has been altered and added to over the centuries (it took about a 1,000 years to reach the form we see today, there since the late 15th century) and there are numerous suprise corners hidden away up and down steps and behind arches.

We looked in at the Beaney Institute, now the Royal Museum and Art Gallery, where they had an interesting permanent collection of the works of Thomas Sidney Cooper(1803 - 1902) Victorian painter of livestock, especially renowned for his cattle. They were rather nice.
They also had an exhibition "From Representation to Abstract", featuring modern artists available in local commercial galleries. Again, some interesting pictures, and one or two we would have gladly brought home to hang on our own walls.
We weren't overly impressed by the Museum of Cambridge - lovely medieval wood framed building, but too much book-on-the-wall with too few artefacts or reproductions. The best bits were the artists' impressions of Canterbury as it changed through the centuries.
We finished up with the "Canterbury Tales Experience" - great fun and very well done, if a tad over-priced.
All in all another very good day.
